Appalachian Trail in Vernon NJ
Just 72 miles of America's best known foot path AT pass though the New Jersey Highland and of those 72 miles, 20 meander through Vernon Township.
Northbound hikers enter Vernon by the Wallkill National Wildlife Refuge and exit the township after passing over Wawayanda Mountain and hiking though Wawayanda State Park.
Pochuck Boardwalk / suspension bridge and Pinwheel Vista (which locals typically refer to as "Stairway to Heaven" are a couple of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. There are a few things you should know if you're planning on visiting our beautiful boardwalk.
- Parking is very limited at the west end of the boardwalk by Glenwood Road. Please follow posted parking signs and information. If you're not opposed to hiking a bit further (not all boardwalk), consider parking at the AT trail head on Route 94 (near Heaven Hill Farm) and hiking SOBO to the boardwalk.
- Please respect all property and local residences around the trail.
- Please "carry in / carry out" anything you bring with you and abide by the seven Leave No Trace principals.
